We were such good friends when we were dating

The tears from my eyes kept falling

Some jealous girl told you I was cheatin'

My mind was playing games with the memory

Old Glory

As I stood at attention watching Old Glory fly,
A young boy & his dad were standing close by.
I heard the young man ask his dad,
"Daddy you don't salute the flag. Why?"
The dad turned to his son with a tear in his eye,
And said, "Son, I'll tell you why.
My friend, John McEntire, did not come back
From a war we were asked to fight
Billy White lost his leg. Peter Smith lost his sight.
In that same war I lost my arm,
And the sight in one eye,
And I'm sorry, but with my right arm gone
It's not my fault. I just can't salute Old Glory,
But I still love my country, and with one good arm
I can still hold your hand,
And it's not that I don't care for our flag
Or Old Glory for which it stands.
It's the pain I get when I think of the war
That I really don't understand."

America, America, the land means much to me.
As Old Glory flies before my eyes for all eternity.
