PRIDE OF THE PRAIRIE RAISES MONEY FOR MISSISSIPPI! Anita, Iowa....."After watching the Academy of Country Music Awards Show in Las Vegas this year, I wondered to myself what exactly has happened to the 'country' in country music?" It's a question asked by traditional country music concert artist, and the "Pride of the Prairie," Jackie Shewey, who hails from the great plains of Nebraska. Shewey, who still holds a great deal of respect and admiration for artists like Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn, isn't far from the truth in the minds of many older country music fans. According to Shewey, "The music of Cline and Lynn wouldn't be recognized as country music these days." Shewey who is preparing for a concert of golden classic country music at the Oak Tree Opry, in the small rural town of Anita, Iowa, on June 2nd (7pm), is quick to add, "I've been doing concerts and performances for quite a long time now, and there is a certain element that has always been part of 'country' music which no longer exists. I still hold with the older style, even though I'm a newer artist. Matter of fact, I'm not only doing my Patsy Cline salute June 2nd in Anita, I'm also doing it for the big festival in Missouri Valley, Iowa, Aug 28-Sept. 3. Joining me there, in the tribute to Patsy is none other than Stella Parton, Dolly's sister, and Jody Miller (she had a huge hit with "Queen of the House"). I can't wait to see the audience response to us 'girls' doing our thing with 'real' country music." Joining Jackie at the Oak Tree Opry concert on June 2nd, is Too Tall Tom Wills (once invited to be part of the Riders In The Sky) along with his wife Nancy; Rick & Harriette Andersen, troopers of an older style of country music; Marge Lund a new talent emerging in the upper Midwest; Wild Iowa Rose a family harmony singing group; Francis Hahn, a retired CIA agent who has taken up country music songwriting and singing; and the hosts of the concert, Bob & Sheila Everhart, Grammy nominated recording artists with the Smithsonian Institute. According to Sheila Everhart, "We have been raising money for a festival grounds in Wiggins, Mississippi, that was wiped out by hurricane Katrina, and with the release of our new CD 'Stories and Songs' from which we donate earnings, we hope to keep funneling money south to get the campground and the festival site back up and running yet this year. The Sullivan Family, a great Southern Gospel group are also helping re-establish the festival grounds. They will be joining Jackie Shewey at the big Missouri Valley festival this fall, promoting a country music genre from another era." The June 2nd concert begins at the Oak Tree Opry in Anita,
Iowa, at 7pm with admission prices $7 per person, reserved seats $10, kids
free. Info. 712-762-4363. Please join us for our 31st National Old Time Bluegrass N' Country Festival August 28-Sept 3, 2006, at the Harrison County Fairgrounds, Missouri Valley, Iowa.
