The WA Young Performer Of The Year Award September 3, 2004 Singer strikes a note at Burswood Theatre A strong ambition to become the best female vocal guitarist in Australia helped young DANNI STEFANETTI of Sorrento to win the StarSearch WA Young Performer
of the Year Award on Saturday 28th August at the Burswood
Theatre.
With her “sensational” rendition of the well-known classic “Autumn Leaves”, she was voted the overall winner in Western Australia’s largest talent quest which has been staged over the past six years to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis WA. Danni, who is only 14 years of age, won a trip for two to Melbourne and tickets to the musical The Producers, as well as a recording session of a demo CD of one of her original compositions. Other category winners in dance, vocal, instrumental and pop/rock bands also received recording sessions and portfolio photo-shoots. She was the winner of the Vocal Solo Category, but the panel of judges voted her out of eight winners as the Overall Winner of the main award. Danni was bewildered at hearing her name called out as the WA Young Performer of the Year and it took some time for her to realize that her dream of having one of her own compositions recorded was now a reality. “I can’t believe it,” she said. “I want to have my own songs heard and it is so exciting to know that I can now record one professionally and with live musicians backing me.” Danni’s recording session will be at Northbridge Sound Studios with John Villani producing it and she will be backed by Christian Dixneuf, who has been bass guitarist for many national and international artists, as well as Lee Bradshaw and Leia Corrie on keyboards. Sonja Plummer of EXP Events Management will supervise the vocalising. Danni has been writing songs since she began guitar lessons around age nine and has won many songwriting awards. She recently returned as the only WA representative from the Tamworth Camerata - Youth Music School of Country Music where she had a wonderful opportunity of working with professional recording artists. Her new triumph has given her greater confidence in her songwriting and performing. Like last year’s Overall Winner, Daniel Hamill, who was a finalist on Pop Stars, she has a similar first name and the same driving ambition. “I want to get on the Bert Newton show, if possible, when I am in Melbourne,” she said. “And maybe into the finals of Pop Stars too later!” Over 750 entrants in Albany, Karratha, Port Hedland and Perth took part in StarSearch heats this year and 33 acts in dance, vocal, instrumental and pop/rock bands made up the program at the Burswood Theatre, performing for an enthusiastic and responsive audience. “StarSearch is a wonderful opportunity for young performers seeking an opportunity to gain valuable stage experience and exposure,” said Alex Poor, Artistic & Production Director. This unique event is designed to raise much-needed funds for Cystic Fibrosis WA to provide essential on-going services to the many people throughout Western Australia who are faced with the daily challenges of living with Cystic Fibrosis (CF), the most-common, life-threatening recessive genetic condition within the Australian community. One in 25 people carry the gene that causes CF and each year around 25 babies are born with CF. StarSearch is sponsored by Community Newspapers, Burswood International Resort, Channel 7, GWN, Methodist Ladies’ College and Carine Senior High School. Prizes sponsored by Harvey World Travel - Willetton & Leeming, Northbridge Sound Studios and Chris Huzzard Photography. Applications are now available for the 2005 Tamworth Camerata which will be held from Saturday, 2nd July to Thursday, 7th July. Tamworth Camerata is open to Performers and Musicians 18 years and under wishing to pursue a career in the Country Music Industry. For further details please contact the Tamworth Camerata office on 02 6765 4875.

September 10, 2004 LISA O'KANE: "Peace of Mind" (Raisin'Kane) Though promoted as some kind of California cowgirl (she hails from rural Fish Camp, up near Yosemite), O'Kane sounds more like a sophisticated chanteuse. There's a banjo here, pedal steel there, harmonic phrasings on "Long Gone" that would make Emmylou Harris twitter and some Irish whistles at the end of this second, self-released album. But the overriding listening experience is of O'Kane's sensitive alto precisely illuminating the emotional specifics of literate love ballads. You don't have to be a twanghead to like it.-- Bob Strauss Press Release Submitted By: Martha E. Moore www.somuchmoore.com |
